At our top-ranked Wurzweiler School of Social Work based in Manhattan — the heart of New York City, we not only teach our students the importance of community involvement and the power of transformation, but we also offer them a way to practice it. Care Café is our community-based program providing psychoeducational pop-up support ‘cafés’ throughout the NY metro area. Care Café was born from our mission to provide outreach and involvement in the health of our communities. As the needs of our community are changing rapidly due to COVID -19, so is our outreach, crisis response, support, and interventions.
Wurzweiler Care Cafe offers tools and hope to help you better negotiate challenges and move towards your full potential. Our respectful, responsive presentations and sensitive support empower you for healing and growth. Delivered in a friendly, comfortable cafe environment—full of good food plus great take-away resources and referrals.
I was tired and weary. Bright fall days turned to bitter rainy ones that pushed beads of cold water down my neck and into the seams of my shoes. Every day I commuted on a crowded train under bright fluorescent lights that made my inevitable headache worse. On top of having a demanding job, the presidential election was in full swing and I was bombarded by contentious news that on most days felt assaultive.

The aftermath of the riot at the Capitol highlighted the emergence of hateful messages on social media. In response, Wurzweiler School of Social Work’s Care Café decided to fight hate with the only two weapons that work to destroy it: education and love. For this, they turned to a surprising source of inspiration, inviting two friends, both affected by hate in different ways, to speak to an audience made up of YU students, staff and members of the general public.
Our stories and singing with Amy Gelfman continue to be a hit! Every Tuesday Amy partners with Care Café and with Nachas to bring entertainment and break isolation for Holocaust Survivors in NYC. They love her and we love them!

Almost every Tuesday Care Cafe partners with Catholic Charities for a Parent Association Meeting for the High School for Health Careers and Sciences. We cover all sorts of topics: substance abuse, how use technology, relaxation techniques, healthy eating - even parents' night out! This programming takes place mostly in Spanish!
