Ferkauf Graduate School of Psychology

The Parnes Clinic offers a wide array of services for people of all ages. We also offer a number of specialized sub-clinics including the following:

(Availability of these services may vary based on the time of year, the number of therapists available and the varying needs for services within the community.)

Adult

  • Adult Psychodynamic Therapy
Psychodynamic psychotherapy is a treatment that focuses on understanding a person’s character and life history in order to provide insight into his or her problems and improve overall level of functioning. Common difficulties addressed include depression, problems with self-esteem, relationship issues, post-traumatic stress and adjustment disorders, anxiety and bereavement.
  • Adult Cognitive Behavior Therapy
Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) is a structured, problem-focused psychotherapy in which the therapist uses specific techniques to improve the client’s well-being and overall functioning. It focuses on thought patterns, feelings and behaviors that may be causing their difficulties. This treatment is effective for depression, general anxiety, panic attacks, social anxiety, agoraphobia and other specific phobias, obsessive-compulsive disorder, post-traumatic stress and other stress-related disorders.
  • Bariatric Assessment
We provide pre-surgical psychological evaluations for patients undergoing bariatric surgery. The evaluations usually involve one or two visits to the clinic, after which the student therapist sends an evaluation to the patient's surgeon. If we recommend that the surgery should be delayed, we often offer short-term psychotherapy to help patients prepare for the behavioral changes required following the surgery.
  • Behavioral Medicine Sub-Clinic
In our Behavioral Medicine sub-clinic, assistance is provided in the management of the psychological components of chronic illness and disability, in consultation with medical personnel. Psychotherapy is available for individuals experiencing stress, anxiety, or depression related to medical problems.
  • Career Counseling
Master’s level Mental Health Counseling students offer “Strong Interest Inventory” testing and feedback to provide information that can help individuals make meaningful decisions about career choices and further education. This service is free to high school students and early college students.
  • Psychological Assessment (Adult)
Psychological assessment is the process of using a number of sources of information such as an interview about a person’s history and current functioning, cognitive testing and personality measures to gain a better understanding of the individual’s cognitive and emotional functioning, including strengths and weaknesses. Psychological assessment can also help in selecting the most effective treatment planning options.
  • Weight Management Program:
The Weight Management Program at the Parnes Clinic consists of psychology students and supervisors who have specific training in weight management and weight loss. The program offers individual and group therapy for patients who are struggling with weight problems and other related issues. We follow a cognitive behavioral treatment protocol that seeks to help individuals modify thoughts and behaviors in order to achieve more healthful eating habits and weight loss. This approach has been shown to be effective in helping individuals achieve weight loss goals, especially patients whose BMI (Body Mass Index) is between 30 and 40. While we use this outline for treatment, we also tailor each 45–50 minute session to the individual needs of each patient. Not sure if you are in need of weight management therapy? One way to check is by calculating your Body Mass Index. You can do so at the following link: National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute.
  • Psychological Affidavits for Political Asylum Seekers
The Parnes clinic has a program, which evaluates people who seeking political asylum and prepares psychological affidavits for their legal dossiers. We will work with both asylum seekers and their legal teams in order to help them prepare cases for hearings and trials. If you are interested in this service, please call our main number at 646.592.4397.

Child/Adolescent

  • Child/Adolescent Cognitive Behavior Therapy
Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) is an active, solution-focused type of psychotherapy that is focused on teaching youth and their families skills to modify thinking patterns, reduce negative feelings and change behaviors. It is typically goal-oriented and strives to be time limited, though length of treatment is based on therapeutic gains, so treatment can be long term if needed. CBT is effective for a range of issues including general anxiety, social anxiety, school refusal, specific phobias, selective mutism, obsessive compulsive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, oppositional defiant disorder and attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder. Children between the ages of 2 and 18 are seen within the CBT-Youth clinic. Treatment involves setting an agenda for sessions, building and coaching of child and parent skills, home practice of skills, and family collaboration to promote change. Client progress is monitored closely in order to tailor treatment to meet the individual needs of the child and family.
  • Child/Adolescent Psychodynamic Therapy
Psychodynamic psychotherapy for younger children, generally between 3 and 10, usually involves play therapy to help them explore and express their emotional worlds in order to take control of problematic behaviors. For older children and adolescents, talk therapy is used to provide understanding in order to enhance interpersonal relationships, emotional and behavioral control, and overall quality of life. Psychodynamic psychotherapy is effective in treating anxiety, depression, school problems, the aftermath of trauma, and family, interpersonal and behavioral problems. Support and guidance is also routinely provided for the parents and families of our child patients.
  • Psychoeducational Evaluation (Child)
We offer a full range of psychological and psychoeducational evaluation services for children and adolescents, including academic, cognitive, neuropsychological and personality assessments. The Lemle Clinic for Non-Verbal Learning Disorders (NVLD)

  • The Lemle Clinic at Ferkauf Graduate School of Psychology for individuals with Non-Verbal Learning Disorders (NVLD) is now accepting patients. It is the first clinic on the East Coast specializing in providing services to individuals with NVLD. The Clinic offers a variety of assessment and treatment options for individuals and their families, for whom quality care options are limited. Assessment and treatment are enhanced by training our graduate student clinicians in an NVLD focused course, in which they are taught and supervised by experts in the field. Our main goal is to make the clinic a center for promoting awareness about NVLD and bringing compassionate and innovative care to those in need. We have both remote and in-person options. To receive therapy or assessment services remotely, you must be a resident of New York State. If you are from out-of-state, you would have to come to our campus in the Morris Park section of the Bronx.
