Born in the Bronx, Professor Richard C. Steiner taught in the Semitic Languages and Bible departments of the Bernard Revel Graduate School of Jewish Studies and Yeshiva College until his retirement.
Professor Steiner's interests include biblical philology, Semitic phonology, the history of ancient Hebrew and Aramaic, Semitic texts in Egyptian scripts, the history of Jewish biblical exegesis, medieval Hebrew reading traditions, and Hebrew linguistics in the Middle Ages.
Professor Steiner is an honorary member of the Academy of the Hebrew Language, an honorary member of the Mekize Nirdamim Society, a former Starr Fellow (Harvard University), and a two-time fellow of the Institute for Advanced Studies (Hebrew University). He has been principal investigator of institutional research grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the recipient of a publication award from the Biblical Archaeology Society.
Professor Steiner is the author of six books and 71 articles and the coauthor of one book and four articles.
