Jeffrey S. Gurock is the Libby M. Klaperman Professor of Jewish History at the  Bernard Revel Graduate School of Jewish Studies of Yeshiva University. He has also visited at other distinguished universities such as Yale, Harvard, Temple, the College of William and Mary and the College of Charleston.  

An internationally-recognized expert in the discipline of American Jewish history; with special interest in the history of American Judaism, the history of New York Jewry and Judaism and American sports. He is the author or editor of twenty-four books, including A Modern Heretic and a Traditional Community: Mordecai M. Kaplan, Orthodoxy and American Judaism (Columbia University Press) which in 1998 was awarded the Saul Viener Prize from the American Jewish Historical Society for the best book in the field. His Jews in Gotham: New York Jews in a Changing City  (NYU Press) won, in 2012, the Everett Family Foundation Prize for the Best Book in Jewish History from the Jewish Book Council. His service to his field has included editorship of American Jewish History from 1982-2002 and two terms as chair of the Academic Council of the American Jewish Historical Society. In 2002 he was honored for his academic leadership with the Lee Max Friedman Medal from the American Jewish Historical Society. In 2017, a special issue of American Jewish History was dedicated to his work.  Gurock is also an elected fellow of the American Academy of Jewish Research and the New York Academy of History and has been designated by the Association for Jewish Studies as a Distinguished Lecturer  

 

Parkchester: A Bronx Tale of Race and Ethnicity (NYU Press) appeared in October, 2019. His latest work Marty Glickman: The Jewish Life of an American Sports Legend (NYU Press) is scheduled to appear in the Spring, 2023.  

An avid sportsman, this New York native, who resides in Riverdale, has run the NYC Marathon 12 times.
