CicumcisionCIRCUMCISION SCENE: Three cherubs float around the mohel (circumcisor) and the sandak (godfather), who are performing the circumcision. One cherub holds the banner aloft with one hand and the edge of a crown with his other hand, while a second cherub also balances the crown and delivers a circumcision knife from heaven. The third proffers a cup of wine for the ceremony. The chair of Elijah is presented as an elaborate settée. A portion of the chair is revealed so the viewer can see its carved and decorative elements. According to tradition, the settée is empty in honor of the prophet. Our scribe has designed the chair to seat two with a space left for Elijah. So while the sandak should sit near the chair of Elijah in accordance with tradition, he is actually sharing the space with the prophet.
