    GARDENING CLUB

In addition to an active and enthusiastic community of bikers, Yeshiva University's Albert Einstein College of Medicine (Einstein) has community gardens, thanks to its Garden Club.

    • The Garden Club maintains 21 raised beds, up from 16!
    • With well over 30 members, each cares for half a bed--roughly sixteen square feet.
    • The Club has an active food waste composting program with a new 3 bin compost system built by the students, supplemented with yard waste from Housekeeping.
    • The Club maintains a communial herb graden as well as communal grape and raspberry vines, peas, gourds, and roses.

The Community Gardens not only brings individual members but families, friends and everyone at Einstein to enjoy the gardens. So come check them out!

Please contact the club if you would like to join or help out: aecomgarden@gmail.com.

EINSTEIN ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY AND CONSERVATION CLUB (EESC)

Einstein Environmental Sustainability and Conservation (EESC) seeks to promote environmental sustainability changes at Einstein, raise awareness on the connection between the environment and public health, and encourage students to take steps in making Einstein a greener place. EESC plans to initiate and facilitate grass root environmental consciousness and activism starting with Einstein and the Bronx, hoping that one day the movement will radiate well beyond the Bronx and contribute to the rise of an advanced and sustainable future on Earth.  Visit their website here.

BRONX, OBESITY, DIABETES & YOU (BODY)

BODY is a group of medical and graduate students at Albert Einstein College of Medicine founded to address the high rates of obesity and diabetes in the Bronx through community projects. Specifically, we work to fight these epidemics through exercise and nutrition education programs for children and adults and improving access to fresh, nutritious food using our community garden at 1190 Pierce Avenue. Started in 2011 with the support of Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Montefiore Medical Center, we are now working with the 4th grade classes of PS89 to teach the students about gardening and fresh, healthy eating. The 4th graders visit the garden for a field trip in the spring, helping us plant seedlings while learning about gardening and nutrition. They will hopefully be returning with their families during the summer and fall to harvest the "fruits" of their labor. Excess produce has been donated to the families of patients at the Children's Hospital of Montefiore since 2011. Visit their website here
