YU Library Book Talk | Pursuing Peshat: Tanakh Parshanut & Talmud Torah

YU Library Book Talk | Pursuing Peshat: Tanakh Parshanut & Talmud Torah Online

Peshat refers to the simple or literal interpretation of a text, but its definition is far from straightforward. How do we balance Peshat with allegorical and halakhic interpretations, and distinguish it from Derash?  How do they influence the approach to Tanakh study and teaching?

Dr. Moshe Sokolow, author of Pursuing Peshat (Kodesh Press - 929 Tanakh Project - Herzog College Press, 2024), and Prof. Smadar Rosensweig will explore these questions, which have been debated from Talmudic times to today.

Moshe Sokolow is the Fanya Gottesfeld-Heller Professor of Jewish Education and Associate Dean at Azrieli Graduate School of Jewish Education. He received his B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. from YU.

Smadar Rosensweig is professor of Bible at Stern College.
