Poet Roya Hakakian Visits Yeshiva University

The Diasporas Project of the Rabbi Arthur Schneier Program for International Affairs and Care Café of the Wurzweiler School of Social Work have invited Roya Hakakian, celebrated Persian poet and author of A Beginner’s Guide to America: For the Immigrant and the Curious, to meet with YU faculty, staff and students along with community partners in human services to discuss issues of immigration and celebrate World Social Work Day (officially scheduled on March 15, 2022). Hakakian’s opinion columns, essays and book reviews appear in English-language publications like the New York Times, Daily Beast, Newsweek, the Wall Street Journal and NPR’s All Things Considered. A founding member of the Iran Human Rights Documentation Center, she has collaborated on over a dozen hours of programming for leading journalism units on network television, including CBS 60 Minutes. She also serves on the board of Refugees International. She is the author of two collections of poetry in Persian and is listed among the leading new voices in Persian poetry in the Oxford Encyclopedia of the Modern Islamic World. Her poetry has appeared in numerous anthologies around the world, including La Regle Du Jeu and Strange Times My Dear: The Pen Anthology of Contemporary Iranian Literature. The event is in person and free but registration is required, and it is only open to faculty, staff, alumni and students of YU. For others, there will be an option to participate in the meeting by Zoom - link will be provided in the registration confirmation email.
