Having been denied an in-person dinner in 2020 because of the restrictions brought on by COVID-19, the Sy Syms School of Business pushed to make this year’s Gala Awards Dinner one where people could meet together and celebrate. And on Monday, May 3, 2021, they achieved their goal, holding the event at Keter Torah in Teaneck, New Jersey, following all appropriate pandemic guidelines to ensure health and safety.
The dinner presented several distinguished speakers, including Rabbi Dr. Ari Berman, President of Yeshiva University; Marcy Syms, president of the Sy Syms Foundation and former CEO of Syms Corp.; keynote speaker Steve Lipman, Global Partner at Rothschild & Co. and former member of the President’s Advisory Council; and Dr. Noam Wasserman, dean of Sy Syms, who offered a siyum to celebrate the event.
In his keynote remarks, Lipman emphasized the importance of calculating personal success with a broader metric than the balance of a bank account. “You must think about what you can do for others,” he advised, reminding his listeners about the importance of following the principles of tzedakah [charity] and tikkun olam [repairing the world].
