Celebrating Israel's 70th Birthday

Yeshiva University Students Commemorate Fallen Soldiers and Victims of Terror, Celebrate Israel’s Independence on Campus  Yeshiva University students paid tribute to the State of Israel's 70th birthday today, celebrating the 70th anniversary of the country's independence with lively dancing, reflective Torah shiurim [lectures], and Israel-themed activities. The festivities began with an emotional tekes maaver [transitional program] last night for Yom Hazikaron, a holiday dedicated to honoring the memory of those who died defending Israel. Students mourned the fallen and heard moving remarks from Rabbi Stewart Weiss, director of Jewish Outreach Center in Raanana, Israel, and Susie Weiss, parents of IDF Soldier and terror victim Ari Weiss, hy"d.    Following the ceremony, students joined together for joyous chagigot and dancing with Israeli flags. A festive atmosphere continued throughout the day of Yom Haatzmaut itself with a university-wide barbecue, Israel-themed shiurim and other fun activities.
