Stein Wins Borchard Foundation Center Grant

Dr. Gary Stein, Professor at Wurzweiler School of Social WorkA grant proposal submitted by Wurzweiler School of Social Work Professor Gary Stein, was accepted by the Borchard Foundation Center on Law and Aging. The $20,000 award will fund research into the experience of older LGBT adults and their families in palliative care and hospice programs. The project will collect data to determine the degree to which their care may be discriminatory, disrespectful or inappropriate. Stein will co-lead the project team with Dr. Cathy Berkman of the Fordham Graduate School of Social Services. Representatives from the Social Work Hospice and Palliative Care Network, American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine, the American Bar Association Commission on Law and Aging and the Center to Advance Palliative Care comprise the remainder of the team which will publish its findings, including recommendations for provider education and practices, institutional and public policy and the next generation of research. Based in Woodlands Hills, California, The Borchard Foundation Center on Law & Aging is dedicated to helping improve the quality of life for elderly people, including those who are poor or otherwise isolated by lack of education, language, culture, disability or other barriers, through education, research and service.
