Yeshiva University has always attracted accomplished faculty from the finest universities, and this coming school year is no different. Below is a list of new faculty at our undergraduate and graduate schools, starting the fall 2023 semester. Dr. Elizabeth Goldman received her B.S. in psychology from the University of California, Davis and an M.S. in Psychology and Ph.D. in Developmental Psychology from the University of California, Santa Cruz. Prior to joining Yeshiva University, Dr. Goldman completed her postdoctoral training at Concordia University in Montréal, Canada. Her research explores how children’s perceptions of robots can be influenced by the robot’s behavior and physical appearance, and she is also examining how young children learn from human and nonhuman agents (e.g., social robots, home assistants, AI). She will be joining Stern College for Women as an assistant professor of psychology. Dr. Charlotte Fiehn will be teaching in the English department at Stern College for Women as a writing and literature instructor. She earned her undergraduate degree at the University of Cambridge and an M.A. and Ph.D. at the University of Texas. Her research interests include 19th-century and early 20th-century British, American and postcolonial literature. Dr. Fiehn has published on George Eliot, Virginia Woolf, Katherine Mansfield and Elizabeth von Arnim, and is particularly interested in the intersectionality of gender, race and class in British and postcolonial literature. Steve Mayer will be a full-time clinical assistant professor at the Sy Syms School of Business. A 1981 graduate of Baruch College with a degree in accounting, he began his career in 1980 at a midsized firm in New York, Goldstein Golub Kessler LLP. In 2006, he became the managing partner of the firm. Mayer retired in 2019 and has been teaching at YU, Fairleigh Dickinson University and Baruch College ever since. Dr. Assa Cohen is joining the Sy Syms School of Business as a visiting assistant professor of finance. Prior to this appointment, Dr. Assa completed his Ph.D. in economics at the University of Pennsylvania. His research primarily centers on financial stability, especially in the context of market microstructure, and macroeconomics. Dr. Patryk Perkowski is joining the Sy Syms School of Business as an assistant professor of strategy and entrepreneurship. He received his Ph.D. in management from Columbia Business School in January 2023, and his research interests are at the intersection of information technology, human resource management and experimentation in business. Dr. Tim Valshtein received a B.A. from Temple University, an M.A. from Wake Forest University and a Ph.D. in psychology from New York University. He joins YU by way of Harvard University, where he was a College Fellow in the psychology department. His research lies at the intersection of self-regulation and close relationships and seeks to better understand the process by which individuals pursue and form romantic relationships, and how perturbations in these processes may undergird problematic relationship behaviors. He will be an assistant professor of psychology at Stern College for Women. Dr. Lisa Gordon-Handler earned her Ph.D. in organizational psychology from North Central University, Prescott, Arizona, and an M.A. in occupational therapy from University of Southern California, Los Angeles, California. She is a registered occupational therapist, and prior to coming to YU, she was a full-time associate professor at Long Island University. The focus of her research is twofold: Identifying a unique student profile that describes learner characteristics and competencies as well as the interface between learner characteristics (self-awareness and metacognitive skill) for academic, clinical and professional development. It is her hope to contribute to screening procedures for applicants, retention, implementing faculty training strategies to improve the advisement process, a critical component of the professional development thread of curriculum to foster student success. She will be joining the Katz School of Science and Health as an associate clinical professor. Dr. Randall Richardson earned his Ph.D. in clinical psychology at the New School for Social Research. He completed a T32 postdoctoral fellowship at Yale College of Medicine, and subsequently worked as a research scientist and assistant professor of clinical psychology in psychiatry at the New York State Psychiatric Institute/Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons. Dr. Richardson is joining the YU faculty after serving several years as the director of the M.A. program in psychology and education at Teachers College, Columbia University. He will be the new associate dean at Ferkauf Graduate School and a clinical associate professor. Dr. Sarah Bloch-Elkouby is joining the Ferkauf Graduate School of Psychology as an assistant professor in the Psy.D. program in clinical psychology. Prior to joining Ferkauf, Dr. Bloch-Elkouby was an assistant professor at Mount Sinai Beth Israel, where she directed the psychology program in the adult and geriatric inpatient psychiatric unit and ran an active and grant-funded research program aimed at enhancing suicide prevention and promoting effective treatments for diverse patients. Dr. Bloch-Elkouby holds a LL.B. from Hebrew University of Jerusalem, a B.S.W. from Bar-Ilan University, and a Ph.D. in clinical psychology from the Derner School of Psychology at Adelphi University. Dr. Bloch-Elkouby maintains a part-time faculty position at Mount Sinai, where she continues to provide clinical supervision and serves as a co-investigator at the Suicide Research Lab and the Brief Psychotherapy Research Program. Joe Shortell holds a bachelor’s degree in physics from the State University of New York at Stony Brook and a master’s degree in English from Seton Hall University. He currently has a consulting practice in which he partners with organizations looking to improve their culture through better communication, teamwork and leadership. Prior to starting his own firm, Joe spent 15 years at the College Board (which develops and administers the SAT^®), where he served as executive director, Talent Management & Development. Before the College Board, he worked with a boutique communications consultancy focused on executive presentation skills coaching.  In the first chapter of his career, Shortell was a high school science teacher in New York City’s public schools, where he designed curricula and published a textbook. He will be joining the Sy Syms School of Business as an instructor of business communications. Dr. Honggang Wang received his Ph.D. from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and will be a professor and founding chair of the Department of Graduate Computer Science and Engineering at the Katz School of Science and Health. Prior to joining YU, he was a full professor at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. His recent research focuses on artificial intelligence and its applications to digital health, 5G/6G communications and cybersecurity. Dr. Rachel Fryman obtained her Ph.D. from Smith College School for Social Work, an M.S.W. from Wurzweiler School of Social Work and a Specialized Honours B.A. in religious studies from York University. Dr. Fryman returned to Wurzweiler in January 2021 as an adjunct instructor in the M.S.W. and new Doctorate in Social Work programs. Her teaching and research interests include social work values and ethics, neurodiversity and vulnerable demographics in the Jewish community. Dr. Peter Franz earned a B.S. at Cornell University and a M.A. and Ph.D. from Harvard University. He completed a postdoctoral research fellowship at Montefiore Medical Center/Albert Einstein College of Medicine. He was an adjunct faculty member teaching statistics last fall at the Ferkauf Graduate School of Psychology, where he will now be an assistant professor. His research is aimed at improving suicide prevention in adolescents and young adults. Robert Auslander is a Vice President and Head of Internal Audit at Bausch & Lomb.  Prior to that, he was Vice President for Policies & Technical Accounting at Bausch Health, and had Senior Director roles at Tyco International and Avis Budget Group.  He has an MBA in Finance from Rutgers and a BS in Accounting with a minor in Economics from Ithaca College. He will be teaching Accounting Capstone and Accounting Information Systems at the Sy Syms School of Business. Moishe Bane served as president of the Orthodox Union (OU) from 2017-2022. From 2006-2022, he was also a senior partner at the international law firm of Ropes & Gray, where he chaired the Business Restructuring Department.  However, much of his time has been dedicated to communal service on behalf of the North American Orthodox community. In addition to his OU presidency, his communal leadership roles included national chairman of NCSY and founding editor of Klal Perspectives, a journal addressing contemporary public policy issues within the American Orthodox community. He will be teaching Designing Your Jewish Life at the Sy Syms School of Business. Dr. Erica Brown is the Vice Provost for Values and Leadership at Yeshiva University and the founding director of its Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks-Herenstein Center for Values and Leadership. She previously served as the director of the Mayberg Center for Jewish Education and Leadership and an associate professor of curriculum and pedagogy at The George Washington University. Erica is the author or co-author of 15 books on leadership, the Torah, and spirituality. A recent book, Esther: Power, Fate and Fragility in Exile (Maggid), was a finalist for the National Jewish Book Award. She is the mother and mother-in-law of YU graduates. She will be teaching Values-Based Leadership in Life and at Work at the Sy Syms School of Business. Since 2020, Bipasha Ghosh has been the Chief Marketing Officer of Dali Spaces, a company building a subscription-based global platform for women entrepreneurs.  Her prior work experience includes Vice President for International Marketing & Digital for NBCUniversal Media (SYFY and USA Network), Global Director of Marketing for Reuters Media, and Head of Marketing (Asia Pacific) for each of BBC World and CNN International.  In addition to an MBA and an MS, she has completed coursework at MIT Sloan in Artificial Intelligence, Digital Marketing Analytics, and Blockchain Technologies. She will be teaching Reimagining Marketing with Emerging Technologies and Startup Marketing at the Sy Syms School of Business. Prof. David Sable was the Global CEO and Chairman of Y&R, where he propelled Y&R to a top five global creative firm at Cannes. He launched healthcare and b2b practices and an in-house accelerator called The Spark Plug. He is now the Co-Founder/Partner of DoAble, a brand strategy and marketing collective. Among his prior experiences, he also co-founded an Israeli agency, Mimsar, that focused on the then-nascent hi-tech industry. In 2013, Fast Company named Prof. Sable one of the 10 Most Generous Marketing Geniuses. He currently serves on the Board of Directors of both UNICEF/USA and the International Special Olympics.  Most importantly, he is a parent of two YU alumni. He will be teaching Business Communications at the Sy Syms School of Business. Matthew Solomson has been a federal judge since early 2020. He earned a JD/MBA from the University of Maryland, then worked in a wide variety of legal and business leadership positions.  He led the government contracts practice group within the in-house law department of Booz Allen Hamilton, served as Chief Legal & Compliance Officer for an $11B federal contracting business unit of a Fortune 50 healthcare company, and served as a Trial Attorney with the Commercial Litigation Branch of the U.S. Department of Justice. He is the author of Court of Federal Claims: Jurisdiction, Practice, and Procedure, a legal treatise first published by Bloomberg BNA in 2016, and enjoys studying Talmud, playing tennis, and spending time at the beach with his family. His son, Noach, graduated from Sy Syms in 2023.
