WELCOME TO POLITICAL SCIENCE AT YC!
Political science studies how people are governed, by whom, and for what purposes. Its thematic problem is the conflicts of interest that motivate power struggles among individuals, groups, and nation-states. It is concerned with the analysis of political behavior, public policy making and adjudication, international relations, organization, and law. It seeks to establish guidelines for a more equitable and peaceful public order, nationally and internationally. As a field of study, its scope stretches from American politics to global institutions and relations.
Yeshiva College offers a broad range of courses in American politics and international relations. Students learn the skills of political analysis, organization and management, policy making, and political negotiation. A practical training ground for these skills is provided by accredited internships with lawmakers, lobby groups, and law firms.
The department also sponsors extracurricular activities such as the annual nationwide Model UN and Model Knesset. It publishes the political science journal, The Clarion, which includes articles by students.
The student-run Joseph Dunner Political Science Society annually sponsors the delegations sent to the Model UN at the University of Pennsylvania and the delegations sent to the Model Knesset at Yale University. It also organizes an annual calendar of events, which includes a visit to the United Nations; a Washington, DC, trip; a Yeshiva College/Stern College for Women Shabbaton each semester; and lectures by leading political leaders and political scientists. The Pre-Law Society organizes activities to inform students about law careers.
Political science students enter graduate/professional schools in law, public administration, international relations, political science, political communications/journalism, and business administration. They pursue careers in law, government (in the U.S. and Israel), electoral politics, public interest groups, diplomacy, academia, public consulting firms, public relations, investment analysis, business administration, journalism, public health, urban planning, and environmental protection.
Students interested in pursuing a legal career should visit the pre-law advisement website.
