SPA 1101 or 1102 Elementary Spanish3 creditsEssentials of oral expression, listening comprehension, and basic reading and writing skills. For students with less than two years of high school Spanish or equivalent experience. Students with one year of high school Spanish may take 1102 with the permission of the instructor or cluster adviser.
SPA 1120 Elementary Spanish-Concentrated3 creditsAccelerated course covering the basics of first-year elementary Spanish in one semester. For students whose background prevents them from taking Elementary Spanish but is insufficient for Intermediate Spanish.
SPA 1201 or 1202 Intermediate Spanish3 creditsIntensive review of grammar; readings in literature; exercises in composition and conversation. Students with three years of high school Spanish may take 1202 with permission of the instructor or cluster adviser.Prerequisite: two years of high school Spanish or SPA 1102.
SPA 1231 Advanced Spanish Language and Composition2–3 creditsWork on special problems of grammar; frequent exercises in translation; practice in composition and conversation.Prerequisite: SPA 1202.
SPA 2022 or 2023 Masterpieces of Latin American Literature3 creditsMajor literary works of Latin America and the Spanish-speaking Caribbean.Prerequisite: SPA 1202 or four years of high school Spanish.

SPA 2113 or 2114 Survey of Spanish Literature3 creditsSpanish literature from its beginnings to the present, with selections from the major literary works. Analysis and discussion.Prerequisite: SPA 1202 or four years of high school Spanish.
SPA 2131 or 2132 Survey of Latin American Literature3 creditsMajor literary works of Latin America and the Spanish-speaking Caribbean. Prerequisite: SPA 1202 or four years of high school Spanish.
SPA 2410 or 2411 Civilization in Spain through Literature3 creditsAn integrated study of the historical, literary, and cultural aspects of Spanish civilization; special attention to Sephardic contributions.Prerequisite: SPA 1202 or native or near-native fluency in Spanish.
