SPOTLIGHT ON...

Michael Davies
RIETS ’08

Michael DaviesNo one can be fully prepared to be a rabbi, but with the hands-on experience I received in my internships, in both schools and synagogues, I feel more confident in this endeavor. The rebbeim at the Israel Kollel also have been a tremendous inspiration to me in how to combine being a Talmid Chacham and a Baal Midot—which, I think, is what Torah Umadda is really all about.

Michael is Assistant Rabbi at Beth Jacob Congregation in Oakland, CA, and teaches Gemara at Oakland Hebrew Day School.

RIETS: THE FOUNDATION STONE
OF YESHIVA UNIVERSITY

» Make a gift now

The Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theological Seminary (RIETS) is the Western Hemisphere’s leading center for Torah learning and training for the rabbinate and is the foundation stone for Yeshiva University. Established in 1886, RIET’s thousands of graduates serve the worldwide Jewish community in the classic Torah Umadda tradition.

Today, some 340 students study in the RIETS semikhah (rabbinic ordination) program, an all-time high. RIETS alumni serve the Jewish community as pulpit rabbis, military chaplains, Jewish educators and mentors in yeshivot and day schools worldwide. They also serve as educated lay leaders, heading some of the most important national and international Jewish institutions and organizations and playing vital roles across the Jewish world community.

Every RIETS student is provided with a full academic scholarship and the Yeshiva offers many different kollelim (programs for advanced study) that provide stipends, housing and other necessary benefits for its young scholars.

Financial support from alumni and friends is a critical component of RIETS’ ability to continue to educate and train the next generation of rabbinical leaders. RIETS is especially grateful for the generous support from our partners. This vital investment in our future allows the Yeshiva to continue its tradition of providing tuition-free semikhah and post-semikhah kollel study programs that attract the very best candidates for rabbinical training.

You, too, can help RIETS continue its sacred work:

  • Endow a chair in Talmud and related studies, to be occupied by a renowned RIETS Torah scholar that embodies Torah Umadda values
  • Endow a fellowship in advanced rabbinic studies for a stellar post-graduate student and create a Jewish leader for tomorrow
  • Sponsor a RIETS semikhah student during his four-year rabbinic studies
  • Support a community outreach program that will impact thousands
  • Make a bequest to RIETS in memory or in honor of a loved one
