Federal Stafford Loans
Helpful Tips and Information

Which loan type should you choose?

Please refer to your Student Aid Award letter for your Stafford loan type eligibility. You may be eligible for Subsidized only, Unsubsidized only, or for both (Subsidized and Unsubsidized).

What is the difference between Subsidized and Unsubsidized?

Subsidized: The interest on the loan is paid by the federal government while the student borrower is in school and during periods of grace and deferment. Subsidized eligibility is based on “need,”which is calculated based on the financial information submitted on the FAFSA. “Need”-based criteria is determined by the federal government.

Unsubsidized: The student borrower is responsible for the interest on the portion of the loan while in school, during periods of grace and deferment, as well as repayment.
