SCANNING FOR VIRUSES ON A COMPUTER
It is advisable for a full disk scan to be run once a week.
RUNNING A FULL SCAN ON YOUR COMPUTER
Open the Symantec AntiVirus window by double-clicking on the following icon in the system tray, at the lower right corner of your screen:

On the left side of the window, click on "Full Scan":

Then click on the "Scan" button, in the bottom right corner of the same window, to begin the scan.
The scan may take a while, but if the window is minimized, the computer can be used normally while the scan is running.

WHAT IF THE COMPUTER IS ALREADY INFECTED?
*
If evidence is found on the university network that a computer is infected by a virus or worm, that computer is disconnected from the network and the registered user is notified.
*
A full scan of your computer (see above) may find and "quarantine" one or more viruses. When a virus is quarantined it does not remove the virus from the computer, it only renders it harmless.
*
In either case, it is necessary to remove the virus from the machine immediately.
HOW TO DISINFECT A VIRUS INFECTED COMPUTER:
| * |
Symantec, the University's vendor for Antivirus software, provides removal tools for most major viruses, which can be found by clicking here.
Note: Most removal tools are specialized for a specific virus or worm. Be sure you use the correct tool.
IF YOU HAVE BEEN DISCONNECTED FROM THE NETWORK DUE TO A VIRUS INFECTION:
*
For widespread infections on the University network, CDs may have been prepared with removal tools. Call the Help Desk at (212) 960-5294.
| * |
If there is not a CD available, you will have to go to an uninfected machine and download the removal tool(s) to a floppy disk, zip disk, or memory key, and then use that to run on the infected machine.
