YOUR RESPONSIBILITY

*

Protecting your computer against viruses and worms will not only benefit you, but also the entire University Community.

*

Keeping your Windows operating system up to date protects you against computer viruses, worms and other attacks.

*

One infected computer can spread an infection and cause problems for other computers on the network.

*

It is your responsibility to protect your computer, which by default protects your colleagues' computers as well.

HOW DO I PROTECT MY COMPUTER?

If you are using Microsoft® Windows 2000, Microsoft® Windows XP, or Microsoft® Vista:

* You must keep Windows updated with the latest security patches.
*

You need to use Antivirus software and keep it updated with the latest virus definitions from the vendor.  Note - Symantec AntiVirus software is available for download by clicking the following link: Antivirus Software Download

* You should scan your computer for Viruses and Worms, at least once a week.

WHAT IS A VIRUS?  WHAT IS A WORM?  WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE?

*

A Virus is a program or piece of code, attached to another program or file, which infects your computer.  Viruses can be transferred to other computers as an attachment to email, but usually infect the target computer only if the attachment is opened.

*

A Worm is a program or piece of code that replicates itself over a computer network by seeking out vulnerable computers and infecting them, with no action on the part of the user and often without the user's knowledge.

*

Antivirus programs do not provide protection from all worms.  Regular running of Windows Update, along with the use of current antivirus software, will protect against most viruses and worms.
