Doctor of Humane Letters
“Our family has always been committed to supporting medical research because of its power to transform so many lives. So many of my own life experiences, starting with my father’s death at an early age, have reinforced this commitment. I’m excited to be a member of the Einstein board and very proud to receive an honorary degree from Yeshiva University.”
The Einiger family’s involvement with Yeshiva University’s Albert Einstein College of Medicine began with Roger Einiger’s parents, Glory and Jack, who were among Einstein’s earliest supporters and members of the school’s Society of Founders. Glory Einiger also played a leadership role in Einstein’s National Women’s Division, until her husband died suddenly in 1964. “My mother was forced to cut back her philanthropic activities at Einstein because she had to raise two children and take over our father’s business,” says Roger Einiger. “For me, it’s been great to reconnect with Einstein and see the enormous progress that has been made.”
Mr. Einiger joined Einstein’s board of overseers in 2005. He currently serves as treasurer, chair of the budget and finance committee and a member of Einstein’s executive committee. In 2008, he joined both the finance and investment committees of Yeshiva University’s board of trustees.
Mr. Einiger is president of Hardscrabble Associates, a private investment firm. He spent three decades at Oppenheimer & Co. and its successor companies, most recently serving as vice chairman. In addition to his service at Einstein and Yeshiva, he has been a member of a number of nonprofit and for-profit boards. He currently is a director, treasurer, chair of the finance committee and member of the executive committee of UJA-Federation of New York; a trustee and member of the executive committee of Big Brothers/Big Sisters of New York City; a trustee and member of the executive committee of the Jewish Communal Fund; and a member of the New York Regional Board of the Anti-Defamation League. He earned a BS in economics from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania in 1969 and an MBA from the New York University School of Business in 1973.
Mr. Einiger and his wife, Carol, were married in 1969. She is president of Post Rock Advisors, an investment advisory firm. Their son, Josh, and his wife, Julie, are television news reporters.
For Mr. Einiger, receiving an honorary degree from Yeshiva University brings the Einiger family full circle. “I’m excited to be a member of the Einstein board,” he says, “and very proud to receive an honorary degree from Yeshiva University.”
