ABOUT OUR PROGRAM

Students have been receiving doctoral training at the Clinical Program at the Ferkauf Graduate School of Psychology of Yeshiva University for more than 50 years. The Clinical program (PsyD), which was established in 1979, has been fully accredited by the American Psychological Association (APA) since 1984.  The program is designed to educate students in the conceptual and empirical foundations of clinical psychology, to enable them to become knowledgeable and thoughtful academic scholars and to train them intensively in a variety of assessment, research and therapeutic approaches. We seek to provide a broad spectrum of training experiences so that the graduates are able to work within a variety of settings.  Students are exposed to a curriculum that integrates relevant research and the scientific foundations of psychology, applied theories, field training and practical experiences with a wide range of psychological services. The program also ensures basic conceptual understanding, in part, through core courses such as developmental, physiological and social psychology that cover fundamental areas of psychology necessary for the professional psychologist.

The Clinical Program prides itself on the broad scope of its clinical training, including practicum experiences at a variety of prestigious sites, an on site university clinic, and opportunities for students to pursue diverse interests. Located on the campus of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, students have access to an extensive network of educational and research facilities and are encouraged to get involved in the larger campus community.  The program adheres to a scholar-practitioner model of training, emphasizing students’ abilities to work competently in diverse settings, working with a variety of patient populations. Students are trained comprehensively in the both cognitive-behavioral and psychodynamic psychotherapy and have the option of honing their clinical skills  in either or both modalities, a unique aspect of the training at the clinical program at Ferkauf.  Students can also specialize in one of several specialized areas, including two new training opportunities: the Learning Skills Program and the International Center for Trauma Studies and Treatment.  The Clinical Program also offers specialized training in couples and family therapy, and in treatment of older adults and other populations. The Gero-psychology program, which received federal funding from 2002-2006, is currently one of a handful of sites in the US, and the only site in the New York Metropolitan area to offer University-based doctoral level training in gero-psychologically informed mental health intervention with the elderly.

There are now more than 600 Clinical Program Alumni.  As our program takes pride in the diversity of our graduate student body, 64 countries are currently represented in the student body of Ferkauf Graduate School of Psychology. The Clinical Program has an ever increasing number of applications (265 applicants for the 2007 incoming class) and an increasing percentage of students who accept us each year. Our applicants are among the most competitive applicants in the country, representing the top universities in the country, our median student has a combined total GRE score of 1200 and a GPA of 3.5. Our internship rates have consistently been higher than the national match rate average. For example, the match rate for the 2007 Class was 93%, compared to a national average rate of 75%.
