February 15 – Dr. David Pelcovitz –
Children & Trauma: Talking to Children About Loss and Terrorism in Israel.

Dr. Pelcovitz is professor at Yeshiva University’s Azrieli Graduate School of Jewish Education and Administration, and Assistant to the President. Director of Psychology at North Shore University Hospital-NYU School of Medicine, and Clinical Professor of Psychology in Psychiatry, at NYU School of Medicine, he has consulted extensively with the Jewish community in the United States, Europe and Israel on a wide range of issues facing children and adolescents, and has published and lectured extensively on a variety of topics related to education, parenting and child mental health, including his most recent book, entitled “Balanced Parenting,” which he wrote with his father.

February 22 – Dr. Steven Fine –
Is the Vatican Hiding the Temple Menorah?

Dr. Fine, director of the Yeshiva University Center for Israel Studies, is chair of the Department of Jewish History at Yeshiva College and professor of Jewish History at Yeshiva University, where he focuses on the interrelationships between ancient Jewish literature, art and archaeology. He received his doctorate in Jewish history from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, holds an MA in art history from the University of Southern California and a BA in religious studies from the University of California, Santa Barbara. Dr. Fine’s most recent book is “Art and Judaism in the Greco-Roman World: Toward a New Jewish Archaeology” and he is editor of IMAGES: A Journal for the Study of Jewish Art and Visual Culture.

War & Peace: A Jewish view of Militarism vs. Pacifism.

Rabbi Benjamin Blech, professor of Talmud at Yeshiva University, is the author of eleven best sellers, and recipient of the American Educator of the Year Award. Among many other notable achievements, he successfully negotiated the return of precious Judaica held by the Vatican, and has consistently ranked among the 50 most influential Jews in America. He is a popular radio show host in New York, who has been featured on the Oprah Winfrey Show, ABC, Nightline, Good Morning America, and has written for Time Magazine, New York Times and Newsday.

A reception was held at the home of Brenda and Sam Gewurz on November 30, 2008. The dean spoke on the topic of “Opportunities  for the Jewish Community Amidst Political and Economic Uncertainties” and used this occasion to thank the Montreal Jewish community whose generosity has made possible the Jewish Education Scholarship Programme (JESP) at Yeshiva University.

In a joint program with Shaarei Shomayim Congregation we presented “It Takes a Community to Raise a Child,” a community day of learning on cross-generational parenting strategies.  Sunday December 7, 9:00 am to 12:45 am.  With Dr. Norman Blumenthal, Director of Education at the Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theological Seminary of Yeshiva University, Rabbi Dr. John Krug, Dean at the Frisch School, Phyllis Krug, cardiopulmonary specialist,  and Sarah Chana Radcliff, marriage and family therapist.

Montreal:

Annual Board Meeting:


The meeting took place on November 20, 2008 from  the Board of Canadian Friends of Yeshiva University will have its annual meeting. This was the first time that a CFYU board meeting was held via live telecast technology.  In Toronto, the live-telecast was hosted at the Lipa Green Building , in the Goldstein Show Room, 4th floor. While in Montreal, the live-telecast was hosted at the Gelber Centre, in the BJEC Classroom, 5th floor.

Toronto: Torah Leadership Network (TLN)
High School Boys Shabbaton
October 31 – November 1

The Torah Leadership Network (TLN) will hold a shabbaton for high school boys in Yeshivat Or Chaim. TLN offers yeshiva high school students opportunities for Torah learning in an informal environment and runs separate programs for boys and girls. For the first time, TLN is bringing a team of dynamic YU madrichim (counselors) for a shabbat of stimulating learning, spirited meals and tish, and a special Saturday night basketball tournament and melave malke. TLN is a project of Yeshiva University Center for the Jewish Future.

Canada Kollel

Toronto Partnership: Summer Kollel

In its second year, this popular program allowed the Toronto community to enjoy learning and fellowship with Yeshiva University’s stars-of-tomorrow. This year’s theme was Torah Umanhigut Yisroel, a leadership training component in commemoration of the 60th anniversary of the state of Israel.

Our programs were held at the following locations: BAYT of Toronto (July 19-20), Bnai Torah of Toronto (July 26-27), Sparrow Lake (August 2-3), Shaarei Shomayim of Toronto (August 9-10), and Adas Israel of Hamilton (August 15-16).

Our distinguished visiting scholars included Rabbi Reuven and Shani Taragin, and Rabbi Marc and Adina Penner

Scholar-in-Residence Weekend

In May 2008, Rabbi Dr. David Horowitz visited Clanton Park Congregation as its scholar-in-residence and addressed the Toronto community on the intersection between Judaism, science and philosophy.

Michelangelo’s Forbidden Messages

In May 2008, our inaugural Scholars Speak event featured Rabbi Benjamin Blech—an internationally renowned lecturer and scholar, the author of eleven best-sellers and a recipient of the American Educator of the Year award. He presented highlights from his latest work, Sistine Secrets: Michelangelo’s Forbidden Messages in the Heart of the Vatican, telling a rapt capacity crowd in Vancouver the story of how and why Michelangelo incorporated teachings of Jewish Midrash and Kabbalah into the Sistine Chapel.

Gala Celebration Dinner



Our Gala Celebration Dinner launching the Yeshiva University Toronto Partnership took place in April 2008 at the Copper Creek Golf Club in Kleinburg, ON. Some 600 friends and alumni honoured Dr. Joseph and Dr. Cheryl Greenbaum, who received our Parents of the Year Award; John and Lori Ulmer, who received the Keter Shem Tov Award; and Bill Rubinstein z”l, a cherished community leader. President Richard M. Joel of Yeshiva University offered the keynote address.

This memorable evening raised approximately $3 million for The Toronto Partnership Project, which will bring the best of Yeshiva University to Toronto, creating a contemporary centre for Jewish life and learning that will benefit organizations and individuals.

Summer 2007 Kollelim

For five weeks, in five communities ranging from Hamilton to the greater Toronto area, a dynamic and vibrant Yeshiva University Summer Kollel offered an open atmosphere of Torah learning, exciting programs, and informal educational opportunities. Festive Shabbatonim took place in the respective communities.

Executive and Professional Heritage Initiative

This Fall 2007 initiative brought wisdom to life by affording participants the opportunity to examine their professional concerns through the prism of Jewish thought, law, and tradition. EPHI tackled current issues in specific fields, including law, medicine, real estate, and mental health. Participants earned continuing education credits specific to their professions, enjoyed forums addressing current issues in their fields, and grapple with their occupational concerns in practical and meaningful ways.

2007 Kollel Yom Rishon

In early 2007, Canadian Friends of Yeshiva University launched a four-week model of the highly successful Kollel Yom Rishon Sunday learning program. Lecturers included Rabbi Menachem Genack (CEO of Orthodox Union and Rosh Yeshiva) along with Rabbi Dr. Jacob J. Schacter, Rabbi Mordechai Willig, and Rabbi Ozer “Tony” Glickman. Some 250 people participated each week.

Wurzweiler Reunion

Social Work Conference and Reunion

To kick off the year, Canadian Friends of Yeshiva University sponsored a conference for social workers in Toronto: “Children of Holocaust Survivors: Responses to Second and Third Generations.” Over 300 people participated. The conference was followed by a Wurzweiler alumni reunion at Gladstone’s Wine Bar & Grill, attended by more than 80 people.

Seminar for Medical Practitioners

During the winter, Canadian Friends of Yeshiva University hosted a seminar and dinner for twenty-five Jewish medical practitioners on “Artificial Insemination, Posthumous Paternity and Surrogate Motherhood through the Prism of Jewish Law.” Rabbi Kenneth Brander, an expert in the field of fertility and taharat hamishpacha, led the discussion.

Shabbatonim Across Canada

Throughout the year, Canadian Friends of Yeshiva University organized Shabbatonim in communities across Toronto, Dollard, and Montréal, attended by over 400 participants. Scholars-in-residence included Rabbi Yosef Blau, Mashgiach Ruchani of RIETS, and Dr. David Srolovitz, Dean of Yeshiva College. YU students assisted in running youth programs.

In January 2007, some 95 people attended a warm and festive event during which we shared a new vision for Yeshiva University in Canada.

The Rav

Remembering “The Rav”

In December 2006, more than 400 people attended a two-day Toronto symposium on the life and legacy of Rabbi Joseph B. Soloveitchik, “the Rav.“ Eminent personalities such as Rabbi Herschel Schachter, Dr. David Schatz, Rabbi Shalom Carmy, and Dr. Arnold Lustiger offered insights on this inspiring figure. The event was co-sponsored with Torah in Motion.

In March 2007, over 350 people attended a Montréal screening of the documentary film The Lonely Man of Faith: The Life and Legacy of Rabbi Joseph B. Soloveitchik. The evening also included a remarkable presentation by Rabbi Kenneth Brander.

Yom Iyun

In October 2006, more than 300 people attended a Yom Iyun at Congregation Bnai Torah in Toronto led by Rav Hershel Schachter, Rosh Yeshiva of Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theological Seminary.
