Fellowship Reception in Boston

 Permanent link

On Tuesday evening, March 9th, the School-Partnership organized a welcome reception for Na’amit Sturm-Nagel, who is participating in its GiveBack Fellowship at the Maimonides School in Boston.  Community lay leaders and professionals from around the greater Boston area gathered at the home of Zev and Risa Gewurz to hear about her work at the school.

After a dessert reception, participants were welcomed to the event by Doodie Miller who then introduced Joey Small to talk about the creation and development of the fellowships. The main speaker of the evening was Na’amit who shared her experiences as a young, novice teacher at the school and answered questions from the community including topics such as steps the school/community can take to recruit more talented young teachers.

After taking questions from the audience, Dr. Scott Goldberg, Director of the School-Partnership, discussed the work that Yeshiva University is engaged with not only in their local neighborhood, but also serving schools across North America.  The Boston community is excited to continue its partnership with Yeshiva University and to continue to turn to YU to help them recruit, train and support talented educators.

If your school is interested in hosting a fellow please fill out the following application here.

Case and Commentary - The Choice

 Permanent link

The Institute is pleased to launch Case and Commentary, discussions of current challenges facing Jewish educators and lay leaders followed by proposed solutions from experts in the field. Through our partnerships with Jewish day schools across North America, educators and lay leaders have shared with us some of the most challenging situations they face in their positions. The notion of Case and Commentary originated from a retreat that the Institute hosted for a group of young principals in the winter of 2008. At the retreat, the principals discussed and documented a few of the complex dilemmas with which they were grappling.  These real life scenarios have been stripped of identifying information, modified, and sometimes embellished to enhance their usability as learning tools. The first of the series, The Choice, addresses the dilemma a young promising head of school, raising a family in a small community outside the New York area, faces when he is offered a higher paying position in a New Jersey School.  Should he relocate? Expert commentary from Rabbi Pinchos Hecht, Head of School at Fuchs Mizrachi, Rabbi Chaim Feuerman, Ed.D,  Azrieli Graduate School professor, and Rabbi Ronald Schwarzberg, director of Career Development and Rabbinic Placement at the Center for the Jewish Future, follow providing perspective and advise on the issues at hand.

Share your thoughts and personal experiences with others in the field in the blog comment box below.

Comments? Feedback? Interested in having a challenge you face be featured in Case and Commentary?

North American Jewish Day School Leadership Conference to Include all Day School Networks

 Permanent link

Professional and lay leaders from Jewish day schools from across the spectrum of practice will come together in a first-ever unified educational conference this coming January 2010 in the Metropolitan New York area. Jointly planned by  , the Institute for University-School Partnership at Yeshiva University RAVSAK: The Jewish Community  Day School Network, the Solomon Schechter Day School Association, and PARDeS: The Progressive Association of Reform Day Schools, the shared conference represents ground-breaking work in cost-effectiveness and community building among Reform, Conservative, Community and Orthodox day schools.

Conference10

Historically, each day school network has hosted its own annual professional development conference.  Elements of duplication of service were seen as secondary to the need for each organization to serve their constituent schools.  The rapid change in the economy, which has shaken the day school world to its core, inspired the heads of the various networks to collaborate in new ways, resulting in a conference model which capitalizes on knowledge-sharing and meta-issues in leadership while making possible new alliances among the schools. Conference programming will include keynote sessions by leading-edge thinkers including Alan November, Erica Brown, Lee Shulman and Jonah Lehrer,  case studies, intensive workshops, peer-to-peer learning and network-specific meetings.
