Israel and India: A Relationship Comes of Age
A Year of Celebration and an International Conference

The relationship between Israel and India has existed for more than two millennia.  Indian elephants were imported to Rome through the ports of Palestine; Jewish traders brought the exotic riches of the subcontinent to the Mediterranean world during the Middle Ages; and Jewish communities exist in India that date back to Biblical times.

In modern times, the connections have grown deeper, with both nations gaining independence from Britain in 1948 and becoming leading democratic nation-states in their regions.  Thousands of Indian Jews have brought their unique culture with them to Israel and Israeli tourism to India has boomed.  More recently, high-level business, scientific, political and military relations have grown and a new affiliation between the Indian and Israeli diaspora communities in the United States has emerged.  In short, this is a relationship that has come of age.

In 2008-09, in celebration of the independence of these two important democracies, Yeshiva University (YU) will explore the many facets of the Israel-India relationship.

Events throughout 2009 include a two-day international conference examining the relationship of India and Israel from political , business and medical/public health perspectives: an exhibition of India and the consulate General of India:  an exclusive breakfast for Business Leaders to promote investment and strong relations between the US, India and Israel; service learning trips sending students to Israel and India; a half-day symposium on global health partnerships and a global health summer course in New York and Mumbai India; and other lectures, culture and business events

Sponsorship opportunities are available for events and the celebration.
