Additionally, suggestions are provided to improve password strength, help you create passwords that you can remember more easily, and offer tips on keeping your password safe.

Conficker Virus Warning

What is Conficker?

Conficker, also known as Downadup, is a self-propagating computer virus that infects the Windows operating system. Macintosh users running Windows in an emulator can also be affected.

How does it spread?

Conficker can spread through various attack vectors:

  • Executable files downloaded from the Internet or P2P applications (Limewire, bittorrent, etc)
  • Some USB storage devices with an autoloader, such as a Cruzer flash drive. When connected to an infected PC, the virus infects the USB device, and then can spread to other PCs when the USB device is re-connected.
  • Across the network to Windows based PCs that do not have the security patch KB958644 (MS08-067), or by guessing the administrator password to network file shares.

How can I protect my computer?

  1. Visit the Microsoft Update Website to ensure your PC has the latest security updates. You must use Microsoft Internet Explorer to use this web page.
  2. Update your Anti-Virus software to the latest definitions. If you do not have antivirus software, you can download Symantec Anti-virus from the YU website while on campus. If you are not on campus, we recommend downloading a free 15-day trial of Norton Anti-Virus 2009.
  3. Disable Windows File and Folder Sharing.

What should I do if I am infected?

If you are staff or faculty using a YU-owned computer, please contact the Help Desk for assistance.

Otherwise, please follow the removal instructions from the Symantec website.
